I was actually very impressed with it during testing, but on balance I'd say that if you can, it's worth shelling out the extra £200 for the TK800. (BenQ also do the W2000, which is a lower specced, non-4k version that sells for £689. Still, these feel like unfair quibbles against a device which does truly offer an unparalleled home cinema experience at a price that no other manufacturer can come close to. As it stands, you'll have to stick a streaming stick into one of the HDMI ports. I would have appreciated more HDMI ports (it has two), and I think BenQ missed an opportunity by not including in-built streaming options like Nebula. For a start, I wasn't keen on the design: the electric blue and white colour scheme looks cheap, even childish, and the plastic chassis picks up dirt quickly. The ambient sounds in Planet Earth II made me feel like I was in the rainforest. The system has been designed for watching sports, so that the viewer feels like they're in the stadium – but I’d argue it’s more impressive for nature documentaries. It’s loud, it’s detailed, and it’s incredibly immersive. Many home projectors have built-in speakers, but not many are as good at projecting sound as they are images. The sound quality also deserves a mention. You can also create your own settings, allowing you to create a custom brightness and colour setting to suit your needs, just like on a standard television. The TK800 comes with four different modes: standard, Vivid TV, Cinema, Sport, and Football, each gradually cranking up the brightness that bit more. I was similarly dazzled by the product's 'cinema mode'. The colours, which had been great in standard mode, suddenly popped even brighter, even more vividly. (See: I told you these things have got better.) So, no more having to draw the curtains in the middle of the day to be able to see your projected movie. The HDR colours are vivid, the 4K definition is sharp, and the 3,000 lumen LED bulbs are not only bright enough to project in the daytime, but they’re bright enough to project well in direct sunlight too. The quality of the projection on the TK800 is scorchingly brilliant.
I know, I know, a bold statement, but I stand by it. The BenQ Tk800 is one of the latter – it’s much too heavy to be moving around all the time. But that’s alright because, you know what? This projector is better than your television. I’ve had to tone it down for publication but suffice to say, I am really, really impressed with the BenQ Tk800.īroadly speaking, you find two types of home projectors: portable ones that you can take from room to room, and bigger, more permanent units.
